Making a Clay Golem

A clay golem never comes out of a single workshop. First comes a flawless clay, taken from a rare deposit, settled down to its finest part and left to age for months in a cellar. The mage then draws his circles flat on parchment, and a sculptor of great skill sets them onto the body he shapes, around the arms, over the curve of the shoulders, into the hollow of the knees, without a single line breaking. Meanwhile, a master smith carves the odem, a sphere of steel discs covered in arcane signs where the golem's missions are written, and which will answer the circles of that body and no other.

Then everything happens at once. The mage sets the odem at the center of a circle that channels the plane of Earth and charges it with its energy. That heart is then pressed into the chest while the clay is still fresh, and the magic spreads through all of the matter. If the odem comes too late, the body has dried and will receive nothing more. That is the true challenge of the work: bringing together masters who do not know one another and making them all finish on the same day.

The finished golem does not move. It waits for the control ring, which a goldsmith cuts to answer that odem stroke for stroke, and which the mage then binds to the sphere. From then on, whoever wears it wakes the golem, gives it orders, and sends it back to rest, and the golem never asks whom it serves.

A large clay golem token or character asset depicted standing in a stone chamber, its body covered in carved runes and emanating a circular glowing magical sigil on its chest. The construct features heavy armored plating with visible stitching and arcane markings, suitable for use as a boss encounter creature or summoned construct in fantasy tabletop RPG sessions. This asset is compatible with virtual tabletop platforms such as Roll20, Foundry VTT, and Fantasy Grounds, and fits encounter types including dungeon delves, wizard laboratory confrontations, and golem-guarding scenarios in systems like D&D 5e, Pathfinder, and similar fantasy RPGs.
