The Control Ring

"Whoever wears the ring commands. The golem never asks who."A finished golem does nothing. It waits, motionless, to be given a master, and it is the ring that names one. The ring is entrusted to a goldsmith, for its signs are finer still than the odem's and must answer them stroke for stroke. Every ring is cut for a single odem, like a key for its lock. The mage then binds it to the sphere, and two command words are set into it forever, one to wake the golem, the other to put it to sleep. Between the two, whoever wears the ring gives the orders. Better never forget the second word: once its task is done, a golem does not stop, it keeps going.

The golem does not judge the hand that wears the ring. It obeys the ring, and a stolen ring serves its thief as well as its maker.
Holding one golem already demands attention. Some mages hold several, a ring on every finger, without a single order tangling with another. The greatest, it is said, knew how to forge rings that answer several odems at once, and even golems of different natures. If that is true, those rings are worth more than all the golems they command.
