At night, the gate is shut and two torches light the passage. A single man-at-arms keeps watch for the whole post; the sergeant sleeps in the tower. This is the hour when the Little Gate pays: a few coins slipped through the peephole, and the wicket door opens just long enough to let through a bundle no one asks about.
