The Little Gate, in Winter
In winter, the Little Gate becomes the busiest in Valeford: the passes close, and everything that lives up there comes down before the snow traps it. Shepherds driving their last animals, charcoal burners bent under sacks too heavy for them, whole families behind a handcart they abandon at the foot of the ramp when the axle breaks. Every morning, the men-at-arms curse the portcullis winch, a relic that freezes overnight and has to be freed with a mallet.
