Ashkor's Plan, the Fire Wand
Before You Begin
You want a fire wand. Every shop sells them, and they all spit the same flame. This one will spit yours: the spell you burn into the tree at the end will be the only one it knows how to cast, and it will cast it exactly as you cast it that day. But a tree cannot be hurried. Count on two seasons, and do not count on luck.
What You Need

- A raw ruby, never cut: a cut stone already has a shape, and the roots will not take it.
-
An Astrydill seed, from the shrub of the burned lands, whose seeds sprout only after a fire. They are sought in the ashes, after a forest has burned.
-
A pot of finely made terracotta, engraved with a circle binding it to the Plane of Fire.
-
A length of hemp thread, and a leather that resists flame.
-
A potter who can engrave a circle without trembling, before the firing.
-
A mage able to cast the spell you wish to fix. You, if you have mastered it. Otherwise, someone you trust, because it will be their fire that lives in the wand.
The Order of the Steps
- Bind the ruby to the seed with a tightly knotted hemp thread. The thread will burn at the end; until then, it shows the roots where to go.
- Bury them at the center of the pot, two fingers deep, and activate the circle. The soil must stay warm. If it cools, the seed falls asleep, and does not wake.
- After two weeks, when the shoot breaks through, dig gently and check that the first roots are wrapping around the ruby. If not, guide them with the tip of a needle. You will have to do this more than once.
- Wait until the tree stands a cubit high, and has flowered at least once. Not before.
- The step there is no undoing. Burn the whole tree with the spell you want to fix. One spell, one attempt. The bond sets, and the fire withdraws into the ruby.
- Once the plant is charred, strip away the last stubs of branch, keep the trunk and the stone caught in its roots, and wrap the grip in leather.
Where People Go Wrong
Burning before the flowering: the tree has not yet learned fire, and the ruby cracks.
Letting the roots grow crooked: the wand fires askew, or burns the hand that holds it.
Botching the spell during the burning: the wand will reproduce it as it was, forever, tremor and all.
Traveling with the pot without keeping the soil warm.
What This Plan Does Not Give You
It does not tell you where to find an Astrydill seed, or how to convince a potter to engrave a circle he does not understand. Nor does it tell you how many times the wand will fire before it goes out. I have never seen one go out. But I have only ever seen three.
