Rough ruby

Fresh from the rock, a raw ruby looks like a dull, reddish pebble, and only a trained eye can guess what it hides. Its size drives the price up, of course, but most of its value is yet to come: the lapidary is the one who gives it. By cutting it, polishing it, finding the angle where light kindles at the heart of the stone, he turns it into a gem. A good lapidary can double a stone's worth; a clumsy one can shatter it to pieces. Only a few mages prefer it untouched, for reasons they keep to themselves.
