Treatise on Watch-Rings, Chapter of the Mines
The Dürngal is a dwarven ring of rustic make, still encountered in the older workings, and its ugliness should not mislead you as to its worth, for it was never graven to please but to last several centuries on the finger of bearers who change every ten years.
You must first understand what it measures. Among the dwarves, the soul of the dead descends toward the heart of the mountain to merge with it, and this journey may take a season or it may take centuries, without anyone ever having been able to explain why certain souls take so long. Throughout that time the soul rests within the stone, and this rest is necessary to it, so much so that a soul drawn from its rest before the hour never again finds the road to the heart.
The ring is woken by a word and then lights the gallery with a blue glow sufficient to walk by. That light declines as one draws near a resting soul, and goes out entirely upon reaching it, so as not to disturb it. The bearer who finds himself in the dark knows, therefore, that he must stop the opener's hand before the first blow.
Note that the light dims before it dies. It is a warning, and a distracted young dwarf may well miss it.

A token or prop asset depicting a runic dwarven ring hovering above stone, emitting blue magical flames and arcane runes along its band, set against a dimly lit library or mine interior background. The item functions as a watch-ring that detects resting souls within stone, glowing blue when active and extinguishing near undisturbed spirits, making it suited for underground mine encounters, dwarven tomb exploration, or soul-detection mechanics in fantasy RPG systems. Compatible as a handout, inventory item visual, or scene prop in virtual tabletops such as Foundry VTT, Roll20, and Fantasy Grounds for campaigns featuring dwarven lore, undead, or spirit-based encounters.
