Lyrax Hunt

A Lyrax hunt rarely begins in front of the monster. It begins with a commission: a captain who wants a cuirass, a thief who dreams of boots that make no sound, a noble who has heard that a helm of this leather stops screamed spells. From there, every step is an adventure in itself, and the fight is only one scene among many.
First, you have to know where to look. The Lyrax lives in flooded caves near underground lakes, and those who know its tunnels don't hang around taverns. They are old miners, ferrymen of black water, survivors who are in no hurry to go back down. Convincing them is one scene. Trusting them is another.
Next, you have to understand the beast. The unease that tightens your chest in the dark is its first sign, not yet its attack. It always bursts from one of the galleries it has dug in advance, and a good guide knows how to find them. Blocking them protects the group, but a cornered beast screams, and that scream brings the ceiling down. Fleeing toward the water is the classic mistake, because that is where it is at home.
Killing is not enough. A collapsed ceiling means a buried beast and a lost hide. A Lyrax brought down cleanly is worth a fortune; brought down badly, it is worth the price of the funerals.
Then you need the hands. Only a master tanner can work this leather without killing its silence, and the surest are orcs. They aren't found around the corner, and they don't work for just anyone.
And there is always another way. A group that has understood the beast may judge the hunt too dangerous: buy a hide from other hunters, join forces with them, come back better prepared. Knowing when to walk away is part of the hunt too.
