Hoveling, the Companion Who Picks Only One
Temperament
He loves, and he loves one person only. There is nothing gentle in that tenderness for anyone else: he watches who touches you, who talks to you too long, who sleeps too close. Never bring two of them into the same group; they will fight, and the matter ends only when one of them is dead. What he gives you, he will give to no one else, and that is the whole trouble.
Handling him
You do not catch him, you wait for him: open hands, low voice, and a wild strawberry set within reach, for that is his weakness. After that you pay every day, in petting and in time, and you never miss one. A neglected Honeling does not bite; he dims, stops listening, and gives you back exactly what you gave him.
Rewards
Every berry in the underbrush, and he knows the underbrush better than you do. Offer him the handful you just picked: what he turns down, you will not eat either. It is the only service he renders, and he renders it only to the one he chose. He does not warn you. He turns his head away, that is all. It is up to you to watch.
At the table
Play him always on his master: perched near the ear, tail curled around an arm. At the least loud noise he bolts, leaps from one shoulder to the other, and vanishes under a cloak. And when everyone settles in for the night, he sleeps without letting go, gripping a wrist, so that the one he chose never gets up alone.
The Azure Hoveling is a small, opossum-like fantasy creature token covered in blue and white quill-like fur, depicted crouching beside a forest stream on mossy rocks. This companion token is designed for tabletop RPG sessions as a loyal familiar or animal companion NPC, suited to wilderness, forest, and travel encounters. Its small size and distinctive blue coloration make it easy to identify on the game board, and it is compatible with virtual tabletop platforms such as Foundry VTT, Roll20, and Fantasy Grounds. Ideal for fantasy RPG systems including D&D 5e, Pathfinder, and other nature- or druid-themed campaigns.
