It hunts not by sight, but by weight, vibration, and pounding footfall: the heavier a party, the louder it calls. It strikes from below, swallows, and dives again before anyone has truly marked the spot. You spot it. On the opposite slope, a mule convoy plods along, bells and curses included. Suddenly the ground splits open beneath it in a single crack, dry as a thunderclap. A mouth full of rock and mud erupts, closes on two beasts at once, and dives back down. When the dust settles, all that remains is a scar in the slope and mules screaming.The ambush. The water begins to tremble in the flasks. The ground has not given way yet, but it has already changed its mind. A rumble rises from below, heavy, direct, and you understand too late that it is not passing through the mountain: it is coming for you. The earth splits as if under an invisible jaw. How it fights. It does not fight: it strikes once, swallows, and vanishes. It prefers mass, pack beasts, convoys, clustered bodies. Far from the nest, it ignores whatever is alone and light; near the nest, every intruder becomes prey.How to fight it. You do not fight it, you outwit it. Travel light, spread out, break the rhythm of your steps: a quiet scout crosses where a convoy signs its own death. In spring, avoid the shores of mountain lakes. And if the nest is near, do not wait for the mother: offer her something heavier elsewhere.
The Pitmaw is a massive subterranean creature token depicted mid-eruption from rocky, snow-dusted mountain terrain, with its enormous open maw, clawed forelimb, and stone-textured hide fully visible as debris scatters around it. This boss-level monster token is suited for ambush and encounter scenarios in alpine, highland, or wilderness settings, functioning as a burrowing predator that targets grouped characters or heavy convoys. Compatible with virtual tabletop platforms such as Foundry VTT, Roll20, and Fantasy Grounds, it fits encounters in fantasy RPG systems including D&D 5e, Pathfinder, and OSR rulesets where large or gargantuan creature stats apply.
