Liches
“Dying takes but a moment. They chose to make it last forever.”
An archivistA lich is a wizard of extraordinary power who has given up life for an eternal death. Some seek the time to finish a great work, others power, others still a cause no single lifetime could serve. Before dying, the lich seals its life essence inside a phylactery (a vessel it hides with the utmost care), and as long as the phylactery exists, its body rises again after every defeat. Should the phylactery be destroyed, the lich vanishes entirely, body and soul.

“(closing her book) A promise is worth what the one who makes it is worth. Yours were worth nothing.”Three centuries ago, portals opened that only one of the dead could close. Aethrinn Velaroth-Ambrithel, archmage of the elves of the Ivael Weald, gave far more than her life to do it: she became a lich, giving up the rest of the dead forever, and she sealed them. Her people, for whom life is the sacred bond between sky and earth, could not welcome one who still walked without it: she had been promised gratitude, she received exile, and she had to flee and hide. Three centuries of bitterness did the rest. She no longer believes in promises or in sacrifice, and she harbors a visceral hatred of elves: not one of them has ever left her lair alive. She has one weakness left: she still listens, to the very end, to those who come to thank her.
