The Lava Onychophoran, the Lavaslick
"Wherever she has spat, the ground is hers."She lives in the hot places of the earth: volcanic vents, lava lakes, tunnels where the rock still flows. Scholars call her an onychophoran ("claw-bearer") for the hundreds of needle-fine hooks lining her legs, which grip where nothing else can. A thick mucus covers her entirely, so effective that lava slides off her skin, and her maw produces it constantly, in long strands that smoke on the stone. She never changes shape: she molts all her life and grows with every molt, and the oldest exceed sixteen feet and several tons. Her shed skins lie for whole seasons at the edge of lava lakes without the fire touching them.Appearance
You spot her. First an empty skin, as long as a rowboat, stranded on the shore of a lava lake. Then, a little farther on, a dark mass slowly emerges, molten rock streaming off her back like water off a seal. She reaches the shore with the dry clicking of hundreds of hooks, and every drop of drool hisses on the scorching stone.The tunnel. Alone, she cannot take anyone by surprise, but two of them know how to seal a tunnel. In a stifling passage, a glistening wall suddenly blocks the way. You turn back: the same wall is moving behind you. The floor under your boots is already shining, and it is too late to run.Combat
How she fights. She spits. The mucus floods the ground and clings to the hands: on it, staying upright or keeping a weapon in hand is impossible, while her hooks move through it with ease. She then closes in until she can swallow her prey whole. When anyone comes too close, she curls up and slides her whole body sideways to sweep their legs.How to fight her. She is slow and clumsy: on dry ground, the advantage is yours. Never set foot in her drool, keep a dry way out behind you, and beware of narrow tunnels she can coat from wall to wall. A still-soft molt on the shore means a beast that has just shed: her new skin is tender and her mucus still scarce, and it is the only time blades and lava alike can bite into her. Once you are in her mucus, she chooses the moment.
The Lava Onychophoran is a massive, armored creature token covered in hardened, magma-streaked carapace segments with visible mucus strands dripping from its maw, set against a volcanic cave background with glowing lava light. It features hundreds of hooked legs, a wide fang-lined mouth, and a bulky body exceeding human scale, making it suited for boss-level encounters in volcanic, subterranean, or elemental-themed environments.
