The Giant Razor Clam, the Mudflat Gravedigger

“If the sea won’t give back your drowned, go look in the mudflats.”
A cockle gatherer
The giant razor clam is a scavenging shellfish as tall as a man that lives buried in the mud of the tidal flats. At low tide, it rises out of the muck and opens to let out a long, clawed arm, which gathers whatever the sea has left behind: dead fish, stranded seals, the drowned. Its metabolism is slow. It keeps its catch inside its shell for weeks, digesting it little by little. It does not attack the living.
When You Come Across It
On the bare mudflat stands a tall shell crusted with barnacles. Through the half-open slit, you glimpse a boot, a sleeve, sometimes the glint of a ring on a drowned man’s finger. The clam stays perfectly still. As long as you leave what it holds alone, you can walk right past it safely.
Danger
Anyone who tries to take its meal feels the arm clamp around their ankle, and the clam immediately tries to sink back into the mud, dragging them down with it. Fishermen know the remedy: a handful of salt poured on the mud at the base of the shell, and the creature lets go of everything to rise to the surface. Those searching for a loved one lost at sea always bring a bag of salt.

A Giant Razor Clam creature token or encounter asset depicting a massive barnacle-encrusted bivalve shell emerging from a muddy tidal flat, with a long multi-clawed arm extending from its partially open slit. The setting features a desolate coastal mudflat under an overcast stormy sky, scattered debris, and waterlogged terrain. This asset suits coastal wilderness and tidal zone encounters in horror, dark fantasy, or nautical RPG campaigns, functioning as an environmental hazard or neutral scavenger creature rather than a standard combat enemy. Compatible with virtual tabletop platforms such as Roll20, Foundry VTT, and Fantasy Grounds for low-tide exploration, investigation, or rescue scenarios.
