The first were taken by goblins who dreamed of mounts, and who learned the hard way that it carries no one: it devours. So they turned it toward war, where the gamble only half held. It kills wonderfully, but nothing tames it, and its calm is paid for in meat, at a price that bleeds purses as surely as carcasses. You spot it. As the beast comes toward you, you see beneath its skin, so thin that not an ounce of fat can hide there, every muscle draw tight and roll. Foam beads and threads of drool fall from between the bars of the iron cage that serves as its muzzle. And underfoot, at each stride, the ground gives you back its weight, dull, heavy, closer.It is loosed. Behind the goblin line, a handler bends over the beast. A clank of iron, and the cage drops into the dust. The dog does not growl. It is already running, straight at you.Combat
How it fights. It charges with all its weight, knocks you down, then bites and does not let go. A blade does not make it back off, and neither does pain. Unmuzzled too soon, it no longer tells the enemy from the hand that holds it, and goes for whatever is nearest.How to fight it. Do not let it knock you down: a man on the ground does not get up from under 260 pounds. Put your back to a wall, a rock, a comrade. And remember it has only one loyalty, meat: a haunch thrown at the right moment buys a few seconds, and a fight that drags on turns it against its own masters.
