The Narcissus Ring, the Step Too Far
"Every speech raises him one step higher, and none shows him where to stop."What it is
A ring of chased silver whose bezel frames, beneath an arch bristling with pinnacles and foliage, an ivory face with peaceful features. The name "Narcissus" runs along the band in old lettering, between engraved scrolls and flowers. It is said to have been made for those whose trade is to be listened to, orators, advocates, envoys or preachers, who want to be heard a little more than the others.
What it does
It upholds the speech of whoever wears it: words come without searching, the voice finds its fullness, silences fall at the right moment. When it works, the eyes of the ivory face kindle with a golden glow, and a presence radiates from the wearer the moment he enters a room. The audience catches itself listening to him before he has said anything of note.
What it costs
Every success calls for a larger hall, a greater audience, a loftier cause to defend. Little by little, his stories grow grander, every conversation comes back to him, and the day arrives when he listens to others with impatience, as one waits for one's turn. He does not notice. His companions see it long before he does.
