The Inconsolable, Saber of Captain Salt-Eye
“If he spares your ship, ask yourself whether anyone is still waiting for you.”
Harbor sayingWhat It Is
This saber belonged to Captain Horace, known as Salt-Eye, who commands a ship of the undead. It was the despair of two lovers that gave birth to the blade’s magic. The guard is carved from a bone of Elspeth, Horace’s wife, who died with child, and the cherub that adorns it is the baby she carried. Along the blade, Horace set the finger bones of widows to keep her company. No one knows how the saber left his hand, or whether he is still looking for it.
What It Does
When it is grasped, the hands of the guard come alive and grip the bearer’s own: as long as they fight, no one can disarm them. When the saber defends its bearer, it screams with the fury of a spectral woman. Its edge is devastating, and the spectral energy within the blade wounds the mind as much as the flesh. Anyone without the strength of soul to resist is left frozen with pain.
What It Costs
Every night, and all the more when the sea is near, its bearer watches the person they love most die. For Horace, it was a way to find Elspeth again. For a sound mind, those nights soon become unbearable.
The Lament of Salt-Eye
Horace loved two things in this world: Elspeth, and the sea. As long as he came back to port, each forgave him for the other. The winter Elspeth fell pregnant, she begged him to stay, but the sea called louder, and he sailed. Weeks went by without a sail on the horizon, and his absence became a weight she could no longer bear: one rainy evening, she climbed the cliff and threw herself into the void. When he returned, Horace found her on the beach, and madness took him. He would never again choose between his two loves. He had the guard of his saber carved from one of Elspeth’s bones, and his despair, mingled with that of the dead woman, gave birth to a magic in the blade that has kept him alive ever since. His crew followed him into death. Salt-Eye boards only ships carrying people who love each other, and it is said he knows before the grappling hooks fly. He kills the husband, lets the wife live, and takes one of her finger bones, which he sets into his blade so that Elspeth is no longer alone. Every night, he watches her die again, because it is the only way he has found to see her.
