The Acid Grenade
"The cube cleaned. The grenade does not choose."The caustic cube's acid comes from an alchemist's flask, poured into the jelly on the day it was made, and it was the cube's magic that reined in its appetite: it dissolved only what it was allowed to dissolve. Once the cube is destroyed, its mass is filtered drop by drop to strip out the clutter it carried, rodent bones, buckles, nails. What falls into the flask below has lost its rein.
Sealed in a thick glass flask and bound in a net of twine for grip, it becomes a grenade. The glass bursts, the acid eats whatever it touches, and its fumes seize the eyes and throat of anyone standing too close. Against a door, a lock, or a suit of armor, it is a key that will not be refused.
Not all of them are equal. Their strength depends on the skill of the alchemist who supplied the original solvent, so connoisseurs ask where the cube came from before they ask the price.
Then there is carrying it. A cracked flask at the bottom of a satchel gives no warning, and in a closed room, the fumes make no distinction between the one who threw and the one who was hit.
