The Penitent

A repeating crossbow, heavy and dark, that fires wooden stakes one after another without the need to reload. It is the work of a single man, an old weaponsmith who built it by night over many years, convinced that a vampire had killed his sister while the authorities spoke of an accident. He named it the Penitent, because he never forgave himself for not being there. Every piece of it carries his rage. But a weapon like this does not stay secret, and its maker talked about it too much, over the years, to too many people. Against a vampire, it may be the finest weapon ever forged. For whoever owns it, it is also a target.
