The Thar-Mên Scepter
"Under the mountain, it still knows when the sun rises."What it is
A rune scepter forged for the war mages of a dwarven city. The rune master who engraved it had the crystal hauled to the mountain's summit, where it drank the sun for a whole season before being set. It keeps that rhythm: its power follows the sun's course, even deep in a tunnel where no one sees it rise.
What it does
In a mage's hands, every spell goes out as if cast by a mage more advanced in his art. The scepter also holds three powers, each on a command word. On "Geirak," the crystal lengthens into a lance of red light that pierces the thickest hides and lasts for one fight. On "Fjorglin," it casts four rays at four separate targets, no farther than about thirty feet. On "Einglin," the four rays merge into one, far more powerful, against a single target.
What it costs
The scepter answers only between sunrise and sunset, and only four times. Once those four words are spoken, it stays inert until the next morning, and at night no command word wakes it. Its help with spells never ceases.
