A beginner imagines it is enough to aim and pull the trigger. His first lesson is about slowness. He is taught the spanning motion, that steady ratchet of the cranequin, the geared crank that draws the string notch by notch without his having to pull with all his weight. He counts his seconds and soon learns the crossbowman's rule: a single shot before contact, sometimes two if the enemy is slow. He also learns to tend his weapon, to grease the nut that holds the string, to check that no bolt is bent, for a warped shaft flies crooked.
The master thinks as a line of fire. To him, the crossbow's strength lies in numbers: you span under cover, behind a great shield planted in the ground, the pavise, while others shoot. He judges distance at a glance, knows a heavy bolt drops fast, and chooses his target before the stock even touches his shoulder. He knows his bolts the way a cook knows his knives: a broad head for flesh, a square, stocky head to punch through iron. It is that square head that gave the quarrel its name.
Here lies the paradox of this weapon: alone it is slow; in numbers it is a storm.
