Edith Varley, the Lady of the Old Bridge
Edith Varley runs the Old Bridge Inn with her two sons, Alban and Jasper. The inn lies far from everything, but the road that passes it sees people at every hour: merchants, pilgrims, soldiers on leave, and folk in a hurry not to be seen in town. Edith is past fifty and wears it well. She has seen enough travelers to know at first glance who will pay, who will leave before dawn, and who will cause trouble. Since she took it over, the inn has not closed a single night.
Describe her
The common room smells of woodsmoke and bacon soup. A woman crosses the room, a tray of mugs held at arm’s length, without spilling a drop, and she has sized you up before you have set down your pack. She has the clear voice of a woman who must make herself heard over the noise, and a laugh that bursts out all at once, then stops dead when it needs to. She keeps her smile for those who wipe their boots. Behind her, two big strapping lads haul barrels. She only has to raise her eyes for them to come over.Play her
Play her warm and practical. She serves fast, counts right, and remembers faces. She asks simple questions, where you are from, where you are headed, and she listens to the answers: with everything that passes along her road, she knows what is brewing three days’ walk away. Under her roof, no one fights. At the first raised voice, her sons are already there, and she never has to say it twice. What she protects above all is her house: a guest who puts it in danger finds himself outside, whoever he is, at any hour of the night.
What she says (rarely)
“A room is two coins. The stable, one. Trouble stays outside.”
“The bridge? It’ll outlast you and me both.”
(without looking up from the counter) “Alban. The back table.”
