Garance Tyl Caerwyld, the one who tells without a word
Her voice, the street wore it out before it could serve. So Garance tells without a word: everything passes through the strings. The fine ear hears a whole story; the ordinary ear, a pretty tune, nothing more. Her one unshakable creed: wonder is everywhere, but you have to scrape away the filth to reach it.Describe her
You speak little, in a rasping voice you spare. Your gestures are measured, chosen, except when you run a hand through your carelessly cut hair: then the woods-child comes back. The mud of the roads reaches your knees and you never look at it. Your instrument, you wipe it constantly with the flat of your sleeve, the way one strokes an animal. No one has ever seen it dirty.Play her
Play her restrained. She speaks little; she lets the instrument finish her sentences. When a player waits for an answer, hold a beat, run three notes, move on: the real answer is in the tune she chooses, not in her words. Reward the fine ear: to the attentive player, the hidden meaning; to the rest, the pretty tune. What she says (rarely)
"I don't sing. I tell.""Beauty isn't gathered. It's dug up."
(to the one who heard nothing) "Listen again. It was there."
