Ysolith Thaelren, the Eldest Pupil
Ysolith Thaelren is the oldest of the Pupils, the apprentices of the Scarlet Tower (an order of mage-observers and spies whose emblem is an eye), and she has watched several of her own masters being born. The day she saw soldiers burn a village, she left her people for the Tower, convinced that knowing things before anyone else could stop the massacres. No Pupil is more devoted than she is, but the magical liturgies resist her: she knows every formula and struggles to make them hold. She believes the Tower is as sincere as she is. She knows that one day, saving the world from its brutality will mean making terrible choices, though she doesn’t yet know which ones. She listens as if every word mattered, and answers with fervor: her voice rises, her hands move, her eyes shine. She asks what you’ve seen on the roads, never what you’ve gained there. She smells of parchment and reading-candle wax. When someone mentions an act of violence, she falls silent for a moment and writes it down in a notebook.Play Her
Speak with energy and believe every good thing anyone tells you about the Tower. Ask the players what they’ve seen of war, and take notes. When she attempts a spell, have her stumble over a word, start again, then barely pull it off. When the players hesitate over a hard choice, show that she’s ready to pay the price, and that she’d make others pay it too. What to keep in mind: she’ll obey the Tower as long as she believes it’s just, and the day she discovers what it’s hiding, she’ll decide on her own.What She Says (Rarely)
