Corvus Almeric, risen from the ranks, deserter of his own soul

Look for his name in the war chronicles: it isn't there. No feat of arms, and yet he is the one you want above you when the plan falls apart. He built twenty careers by erasing his own. One day something gave way: not his courage, but the meaning of what he did. Now he earns gold and gives it away, every day, like a man repaying a debt he knows has no end.
Describe him
You shave every morning, even on campaign, even in the rain, with gestures that never vary. You stand straight the way one holds a post. Your voice never rises; it cuts. Your eyes settle on nothing, as if what they see no longer quite concerns you. With every pay, you set a share aside. No one knows where it goes.
Play him
Play him sparing with words, with the quiet authority of the one who was there before and will be there after. When the plan collapses, let him listen, then cut in at the instant hesitation kills, and hand the glory back to the troops. Once, slip in the gift of a share of his pay: the table will understand he is repaying a debt no one asks of him anymore.
What he says (rarely)
"I held every front but the one waiting for me at home."
(setting down a share of the gold) "Give the glory to the troops. I don't need it."
"Take it. Don't thank me."
