Priscilla Voss, twelve years old, who asks nobody's permission
People take her for somebody's child. That is the first mistake, and she lets it stand a while, because she has learned what gets said in front of children. She has already seen more roads than most of the adults around her, and she means to see a great many more, not to stay alive but so that someone will one day have a story to tell about her. What she wants is no secret. She tells anyone who listens, and a few who were not listening.
Describe her
A young girl greets you first, by your name if she has heard it, and she is already talking before you have decided whether to answer. She talks fast, she talks a lot, and she talks to you like someone her own age. Her walk does not match the rest of her: too certain, too economical. And when she hitches her pack up with one roll of the shoulder, without visible effort, you revise what you thought you were looking at.Play her
Play her curious above all. The moment an unfamiliar people, an odd object, or a closed door enters the scene, fire off three questions in a row and do not let her be hushed by the first "later." Let the others make fun of her size: she laughs at it honestly, she is used to it, and the laugh is real. But when the mockery turns mean, hand her the right words at the wrong moment, in front of witnesses, and let the adult sit with having been put down by a twelve-year-old.
What she says
"Have you ever seen a troll up close? I have.""I'm not looking for a protector. I'm looking for someone who keeps up.""Sit back down. You just lost in front of everyone." (calmly, without raising her voice)
