The Ordo Aurorae Temple of Valeford, in Winter

Under a low sky, the square has emptied of its market, and the few passersby move hunched in their cloaks, slowly, between ruts of melting snow. Snow has whitened the rooftops, the folded awnings and the planters of dead flowers, but the temple's stone has lost its summer brightness: in this gray light, the building looks taller, heavier, almost stern. Its two towers fade into the clouds, the great sun on the facade has dulled, and the crimson banners, weighed down by the damp, no longer stir. On the frieze, the motto waits for better days: SOL LUCET OMNIBUS · NOS EJUS GLADII (the sun shines for all, we are its swords). Only the brazier by the door burns all day long, and the Order keeps it lit for anyone who wants to warm their hands; that is where passersby slow down even more, long enough for a few words and a little warmth, before setting off again into the cold.
