At the end of the old stone bridge, snow has erased the cobbles beneath a blanket no footprint disturbs, and the Old Bridge Inn seems to have sunk beneath its whitened thatch, at the foot of a rocky spur bristling with icicles. Against the parapet, the walking staff has not moved, as though whoever stopped in for a quick drink had finally chosen to wait out the winter by the fire.
