The Watchers' Sphinx, the Cat That Stares at What Isn't There
Temperament
The Watchers of the Moon-Daughter were the first to raise him, but he has long since stopped belonging to the dwarven temples alone. How he got out, no one really knows; he is silent, agile, and curious, which may answer the question.. His calm has nothing sleepy about it: he listens when people talk, follows conversations with his eyes, and understands far more words than he will admit. Like every cat, he sometimes stares into an empty corner. He is right.
Handling Him
He is not tamed; he weighs you up. Speak to him as you would to a person, never as to an animal, and he will grant you his company. With no fur, he seeks warmth: a blanket, a place by the fire, your belly at night. He lets himself be stroked, but he decides when it's over.
Rewards
Warm milk. A bit of fish. A conversation. He likes to be told about your day, and he listens to the end. He rarely purrs. When he does, you have said something true.
At the Table
He sees what hides: the invisible, the wandering spirit, the nook an illusion covers. He does not attack it; he stares at it, without a sound, and does not take his eyes off the spot as long as the thing is there. Learn to follow his gaze, because the day the sphinx sits down, tail wrapped over his paws, to gaze long and hard at a perfectly bare wall, it is never for nothing.
