Norah Draven, the Blood That Remembers
"A vampire believes himself eternal. Norah has someone who is afraid for him."Norah has been a vampire for fifty years, the last of the Corven, and he was made a warrior the way one tempers a blade. Yet what makes him formidable is not in him: it is Saekh, the vahéran of the southern marshes, bound to him by the only bond a saurian of its kind forms in its life. They share what they feel, so much that their memories sometimes blur together. And Saekh, who is mortal, has passed on to him what his own kind have forgotten: the fear of dying. The other Dravens believe themselves invulnerable because they are immortal. Not Norah. That is what makes him the most dangerous.
Appearance
You catch sight of him. An armored figure advances at a walk, a lizard no bigger than a cat coiled on his shoulder. He does not hurry, he never takes his eyes off you, and neither does the lizard. Then the beast slides to the ground, and it grows. The scales stretch, the legs thicken, the jaw lengthens until it could swallow a man, and when Norah climbs onto its back, it is not a rider on his mount: it is a single body coming at youThe ambush. A small lizard watches you from a stone by the side of the road. You shoo it away, it does not move. You barely notice it following you, stone to stone, as night falls. At camp, it is there, at the edge of the firelight. You lean toward it, and the thing that suddenly rears up has a maw wider than your shoulders. Behind you, someone was waiting for it to have your full attention.Combat
How he fights. Norah and Saekh love to fight together and move almost as a single thought: what one sees, the other knows, without ever needing to speak. Saekh plays with its size to surprise, shrinking to slip under a guard, swelling all at once to overturn a line, and Norah strikes where it has opened the way. No one fools them, for Saekh has never been anyone's dupe. And above all, Norah fights like a mortal: no needless risk, he breaks off when he must, and comes back when you thought him gone.
How to fight him. Sunlight, silver, the stake, and fire work on him as on all his kind. Daytime sleep, far less: Saekh does not sleep when he does, and it is Saekh who guards his resting place. The pair's only weakness is what makes them so strong. Saekh is mortal, and Norah feels what it feels: wound the beast, and it is him you reach. Kill it, and all you will have before you is a vampire who has lost his only reason to be afraid. He will be more vulnerable. He will not be less dangerous.
