You spot it. Amid the rollers, a wave rises and refuses to fall. It twists, throws off sheets of spray, then moves toward you against the wind, leaving a trail of smooth sand behind it. Within its mass, a blue glow drifts back and forth, like an eye searching.
The ambush. You’re knee-deep in the water when the backwash starts pulling out to sea, harder and harder. The ground slips from under your feet. When you raise your head, the wave that knocked you down is standing before you, and it comes at you again. How it fights. It strikes like a breaking wave, sweeps legs, knocks you flat, then drags whatever it has felled out to sea. It does it in play rather than hunger, but a man in armor carried off by the undertow drowns just as surely. Weapons pass right through it, and it reforms at once.
How to fight it. Head up the beach. Away from the surf, it spreads thin, the sand drinks it in, and it shrinks with every move it makes on dry ground. When the water pulls seaward while the tide is coming in, get out immediately. And if it came with the storm, it will leave with it: the wisest course is often to wait it out under cover.A water elemental token depicting a young, semi-transparent wave-shaped creature rising from a stormy coastline, with a blue glowing core visible within its churning mass and sea spray dispersing around it. This creature token represents a low-hierarchy water elemental suited for coastal, beach, or shoreline encounters involving storms, tidal zones, or planar intrusions. It is compatible with RPG systems featuring elemental creatures such as D&D 5e, Pathfinder, or OSR rulesets, and can be used on virtual tabletops including Roll20, Foundry VTT, and Owlbear Rodeo. Encounter types include chase or escape scenarios in surf zones, ambushes in shallow water, or weather-event random encounters near docks and fishing villages.
