AppearanceYou spot it. A pack sits against the wall, as if dropped by someone who meant to come back. It is placed too well, right in the middle of the passage, and a clear puddle spreads slowly beneath the leather. When you stop, the cup knocks against the flask, though the air is perfectly still.
The ambush. The pack is heavy, and something inside clinks like a well-filled purse. You lean down to undo the strap that holds the flap shut. It resists under your fingers, taut and warm as a muscle. Then the flap lifts on its own, and a wet tongue seizes your wrist. How it fights. It smothers its own magic as thoroughly as its shape, and nothing gives it away at first glance. Its prehensile tongue grips a wrist or an ankle and hauls the prey toward the maw. Its saliva keeps blood from clotting: an ordinary bite keeps bleeding long after the fight is over.
How to fight it. It hides its demonic nature, but not the life it breathes into the leather to move it. A skilled mage searching for magic will find residual traces of life magic on the pack, where no leather should carry any. An incarnate demon can be banished: the pack then falls still, exactly as it was before, with everything it held.A Backpack Mimic token depicting a worn leather traveler's pack equipped with a bedroll, tin cup, and flask, concealing a large fanged maw with a prehensile tongue and dripping saliva. The creature is designed as a deceptive ambush encounter, mimicking abandoned adventuring gear to lure players into close range before striking. Compatible with trap and monster encounter scenarios in fantasy RPG systems such as D&D 5e, Pathfinder, and similar rulesets.
