That's exactly the problem."Few brewers are rich enough to afford an assistant: an animated barrel that measures to the grain so the beer tastes the same with every batch, or suggests a variation to suit the season and its master's mood. This one is of reasonable size, since the dwarves who build them have no love for oversized works. Rumor has it that some gnomes are trying to animate great tuns holding up to ten tons. Reckless fools. Like every animated work, it never disobeys. If it has gone haywire, it is because no one told it to stop anymore.Appearance
You spot it. Dull, repeated blows rise from the cellar. You go down the wooden stairs one step at a time, without a sound, and the pounding swells with every step. At the bottom, in the middle of a pool of mud that smells of hops and smoked wood, an iron-hooped barrel is battering a cask already split open, again and again, as if it meant to pound it into mash.The ambush. You walk between the rows of casks in the gloom of the cellar. Something warm trickles onto your boot. In the hollows of the carvings on the barrel beside you, a red glow slowly kindles. You look down at your foot, then at the barrel's tap, and realize with horror that the thing has just peed on you.Combat
How it fights. It is a poor fighter, but do not underestimate it: a full barrel already weighs over 550 pounds, and this one carries its iron on top of that. It doesn't aim, it hurls itself. When that mass rolls onto you, it takes far more than a thrust to push it back.How to fight it. You can undo the magic that animates it, or destroy it, but sharp blades barely bite into hooped oak. There is a gentler way. Offer it a scent rare enough that it has never smelled it before, a distant spice, a flower from elsewhere. It stops, sniffs at length, then goes back to what it was made for: trying out a new recipe, as if nothing had ever happened
