Her armor was never made for you. That is exactly the trouble.A meat-eater of the high mountain forests, up to four hundred pounds, whose coat has given way to broad plates. Those plates were not grown for our sake: she hunts the giant insects, and the mandibles of a beetle her own size will shear through anything unplated. You catch sight of her. A wrong sort of creak in the wood makes you look up. Fifteen feet above, a heavy shape is holding to the branch by a gripping tail, so still you would take it for a knot in the trunk. She is not looking at you. She is scenting.The ambush. The steady crunch of the party's boots in the snow has lulled you when you notice an odd mark on a trunk. You step closer for a better look. The snow darkens under your boots. Then you are in it, your mouth full of it, an enormous weight between your shoulder blades, and the snarl arrives far too late to be of any use.Combat
How she fights. Everything is decided in the drop. Four hundred pounds let go from fifteen feet puts you down before the claws do, and her jaw goes by instinct for whatever is hard: a breastplate, a helm, a shoulder plated in iron, anything that looks like a shell. The best protected of your party is the one she picks.How to fight her. Her eyes are poor and she hunts by scent, so holding still will not save you and only keeps you underneath her. The drop is her single move and she commits all of herself to it: missed, she lies heavy and tangled in the snow for a moment, and that is the only time she is within your reach. The marks on the trunks are her territorial rakings. Their height tells you her size, and that you are in her ground.
