The Kûrnvask, the Stone Scale

"The stone has scales, the mountain has teeth."The Kûrnvask is blind, and has no need of sight: the mountain tells it where you are. It feels footsteps through the rock, and a lone step rings clear where a group's steps blur together. It does not seek the adult, too broad in the shoulder, too hard in the bone, and strikes the grown only when cornered, when a miner forces its ground. Its true prey is the lone child, the little one astray in a dead gallery.
Appearance
You spot it. Around a bend in the gallery, the lamplight catches a head as it rises, six meters, eight, thick as a trunk. A maw opens on fangs, and two red eyes turn toward you without seeing you, and without needing to. Behind it, the body coils in the dark, loop after loop, without a sound, as if the mountain itself had begun to turn.The ambush. Your eyes are drawn to patterns on the stone, sliding to the right, then to the left, in slow spirals. Your gaze catches on them, lingers. The floor seems to tilt, the gallery to turn, and you are no longer quite sure which way you came. Then the wall itself rises. Behind you, a coil closes over the gallery: it has already chosen the way you will not leave.
Combat
How it fights. A single coil crushes a steel-clad dwarven cart. In the dark, flight is useless: it feels every step you take, and no gallery runs deep enough. Its spirals do not freeze you, they lead you astray: you lose yourself in them, you slow down, you drift from the others without noticing, and the coil is already there.

How to fight it. Do not fix your eyes on its scales: look down, feel your way if you must. It cannot swallow an adult, so stay together, shoulder to shoulder, and walk as one so your steps blur. It presses only the one it has cut off. Above all, let no child stray: it is the child it seeks, the child alone.

The Lullaby

Drûn ne drûn, kûrn drak drûn,
Khol vask-mûr, khol drûn alaun;
Lampa khol, lampa brûn,
Vask-song drûn, vask-drak drûn.
Which, in the tongue of men, is sung:
Go down, but never alone,
the mountain-beast eats those alone.
Where no lamp shines, where the lamp burns thin,
who sings alone, the beast takes in.
Parents sing it to lull their young to sleep. It is no tale told to frighten. It is the plainest truth they will ever be given: in the dark, the child who wanders off is the one the mountain takes.

The Stonescale, known as the Kûrnvask, is a massive coiled serpent creature with thick, armor-like grey scales, red eyes, and an open fang-filled maw, shown wrapped around a heavy iron-banded chest within a dark underground mine or dungeon gallery. This token or character asset depicts a giant constrictor-class monster suited for underground encounter design, functioning as a boss or apex predator in cave, mine, or dungeon settings. Compatible with virtual tabletop platforms such as Foundry VTT, Roll20, and Fantasy Grounds, it fits encounters in fantasy RPG systems including D&D 5e, Pathfinder, and OSR rulesets. Practical use cases include ambush encounters in mine shafts, treasury guardian scenarios, or blind-predator mechanics where stealth and sensory-based detection replace line-of-sight rules.
