The Rumbler, the Listening Stone

On bare rock, every step is a letter sent to it.An incarnel of the stone, torn from the mountain where it moved freely and where, the dwarves say, it guided the dead toward the heart of the rock. A summoner locked it into a body of boulders. You see it run through the cracks in golden lightning: it is what holds the mass, raises it, and makes it walk. It has neither eyes nor ears. It feels everything that touches the rock, and on bare rock nothing comes near without its knowing. It thinks little and feels a great deal. It was set here to guard a pass against its will, and it guards it with the resentment of a caged beast.
Apparition
You see it coming. On the slope, a heap of boulders where the snow will not settle. Deep in the cracks, a golden glow pulses like an ember under ash. A few pebbles hang above it, motionless, at head height. Nothing else moves. It is waiting for someone to walk. The ambush. First your skin gives warning. The hair rises on your arms, the back of your neck prickles, the air draws tight as before a storm, under a sky that is clear. Then the path heaves. The blocks seek one another and lock together: two heavy arms, two legs, no face. Nothing is looking at you, and a hand of stone has already closed around your ankle.
Combat
How it fights. The force inside it is made for carrying. It tears a block from its own body and hurls it far, crushing what its arm cannot reach. Up close, the rock takes you: a hand closes on a leg or a wrist and holds you where nothing should be able to hold. Break off a limb and it gathers other blocks and re-forms further on. You do not wound stone.

How to fight it. Striking the rock leads almost nowhere. Its weakness is the bond that holds it in this body. Sever it or smother it under anti-magic, and the incarnel returns to the stone: all that remains is a rockslide. That bond holds according to the strength of the incarnel and the skill of the one who captured it. A weak conjurer's grip frays quickly; a master's may outlast your spells. Without magic, look for deep snow: it deadens footsteps, and that is where you cross.

An earth elemental token or character asset depicted in a snowy mountain pass environment, composed of large angular rock segments bound together by glowing orange energy veins, with debris fragments suspended mid-air around its humanoid form. Snow-covered terrain, pine trees, and rocky canyon walls establish a winter wilderness setting. This asset suits combat encounter tokens for elemental creatures in fantasy tabletop RPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Pathfinder, or similar systems, and is compatible with virtual tabletop platforms including Roll20, Foundry VTT, and Fantasy Grounds. Ideal for encounters involving elemental summoning, mountain exploration, or arcane hazard scenarios.
