The Highland Griffin, the beast that is never lent

You break a horse. With a griffin you strike a bargain, and you usually lose it.He was made for vertical stone and for the emptiness between two cliffs, and that is his quarrel with us: he has the temper of the mountain. He does not yield, he tolerates, and only for as long as it suits him. The trainers who claim otherwise generally end up proving it at an apprentice's expense. They say there is a hidden city where dwarves keep whole wings of griffin knights. They say a great many things.
Appearance
You catch sight of him. Your eye passes behind a rock and finds him in the distance, taller than a horse, perfectly still. Even under the feathers you can read what that bulk must weigh. Then he throws himself into the void without gathering himself for it at all, he is gone, and there he is rising again straight up, as though the fall had pushed him.The ambush. A light snow is falling and the clouds hang low, a milky veil that leaves you three paces of sight. You are laboring through the powder, short of breath. The wind whistles, a thin rising note, and you pay it no mind because the wind always whistles up here. The whistle swells, tears open like a cloth split in two, and it has nothing to do with the wind by the time it reaches you.
Combat
How he fights. A cutting beak, and huge talons that open a man up in the middle of a kick. But what kills is the dive. He climbs, he lets himself fall, and he carries off the smallest of you before anyone has looked up. He does not kill him there. He takes him up and drops him.

How to fight him. The mountain works against him as much as against you: a griffin committed to a dive can no longer correct his line. Spears held firm, butted into the ground, raised in numbers and at broken angles, take his approach away from him, and he will not accept the risk. He does not throw himself at it, he circles and he waits. That reckoning holds for as long as he is not hungry. A hungry griffin will accept being wounded.
