The cutlass is the sailor’s weapon. Its short, broad, slightly curved blade strikes where a longsword gets stuck: between two shrouds, under a deck beam, in the crush of a rolling deck. Its weight carries the cut, so an untrained arm severs a rope as easily as a forearm, and its closed guard serves as an iron fist at close quarters. On solid ground, its short reach leaves it at the mercy of spear and rapier, and its curve slides off plate. It comes out of the rack before a boarding; the rest of the time, it pries open crates.
A cutlass token asset depicting a single-edged, slightly curved short sword with a closed basket guard, resting alongside its brown leather scabbard with brass fittings and buckled straps on a wooden plank surface. This weapon token is suited for pirate, naval, and swashbuckling encounter types in fantasy and historical RPG settings. Compatible with virtual tabletop platforms such as Roll20, Foundry VTT, and Fantasy Grounds, it serves as an inventory item, loot token, or equipment handout for seafaring campaigns.
