A beginner believes he must strike hard. His first lesson is about the guard: he is taught first to hold one, the simplest being the roof guard, blade resting on the shoulder and ready to fall. He soon discovers that the weapon is lighter than it looks, balanced by its pommel, and that everything plays out in the feet and the distance, what is called the measure. He is also taught to care for it: wipe the blade, oil it against rust, rewrap the grip as soon as it wears.
The master sees a toolbox in his sword. Once the blades are crossed, in what is called the bind, he feels whether his opponent pushes hard or weakly, and answers before the other has decided. Against an armored man, he grips his own blade halfway down to thrust like a stake: this is the half-sword. And when things grow too tight, he turns the weapon around and strikes with the pommel like a hammer, a blow with the fine name of the murder-strike.
Here lies the whole art of this weapon: in untrained hands it weighs, in skilled hands it speaks.
A two-handed longsword token or item asset displayed against a wooden surface, featuring a straight double-edged blade, a curved cross-guard with downward quillons, a wire-wrapped grip, and a rounded pommel. This asset is suitable for use as a weapon item card, inventory token, or loot drop visual in medieval fantasy tabletop RPG systems such as D&D 5e, Pathfinder, or OSR games. Compatible with virtual tabletop platforms including Roll20, Foundry VTT, and Fantasy Grounds for encounter loot tables, character equipment screens, or merchant inventories.
