Marsh Woz Filtrate

"The light it gives is blue, and that is the only gentle thing to be said of it."

The Marsh Woz is the heaviest of its kind. It has absorbed the mud, the peat, and that breath which rises from dead water and kindles at night into will-o'-the-wisps. Once the beast is slain, its mass is passed through layers of cloth and fine sand to strip out the roots, the gravel, and everything else it swallowed from the bottom. What runs through is a heavy, black, glistening filtrate that smells of still water.
A torch dipped in it burns longer than any other, almost without smoke, with a bluish flame that gives faces the complexion of the drowned. Travelers love it. Marsh folk hate it: to them, a blue light above the water is the one you follow until you drown, and whoever carries it at night is as likely to send a village running as to lead it astray.
Poured into a clay pot with a wick for a stopper, it becomes a weapon. The pot shatters, the filtrate clings to whatever it touches, shield, armor, skin, and burns with no way to tear it off. Nor does it come away any more easily from the clumsy hand that threw it short.
Caulkers use it too, more peacefully, to seal hulls and barrels.
Poorly filtered, it keeps its mud and chokes at the first fire. Poorly stored, it keeps something else. They say a jar left open beside a sleep
