The Ceiling

What comes from above is never parried.

The flail throws all its mass to the end of a chain, passes over shields and around guards where a rigid weapon is stopped. The drawback: it never fully obeys, threatens its bearer as much as its target, and a single bad link is a death sentence.

Everywhere, the flail is born of a harvest, but each people reaps what resembles it. Among men it is the farmer's tool that beats the wheat, parts the grain from the chaff, strikes down what feeds. Among dwarves it is the miner's tool that beats the stone: to bring a loose rock down from a ceiling, a miner never stands beneath it; he hooks a weighted head to a chain and clears the vault from a distance. One beats what feeds, the other what endures, and the weapon kept the motion. The head is poured in rock-iron, the chain forged link by link, the smith's whole pride, for no one weaves metal like a dwarf. It is tended link by link, on the knees before every sortie: on a flail, it is the weakest link that kills its bearer, and it gives no warning.

The dwarven hand loves this weapon despite itself. Everything a dwarf wields carries its mass far from the fist, and no weapon carries it farther than this one: the body knows it by instinct. But the head, at the end of its chain, keeps a will of its own, and a dwarf distrusts what does not fully obey. So the flail stays a miner's weapon more than a lord's, a tool turned weapon that never lost the smell of the deep galleries. Its bearer aims for the guard before the man: the head passes over the shield and falls behind it, curls around the raised arm, bites where nothing covers. And he carries the miner's law into battle: never stand under what you bring down; strike so the mass falls on the other.

Here lies the whole nature of this weapon: the others strike the enemy, the flail brings the mountain down on him.
