The battle axe puts all its force into a single edge: it splits shields, bites armor where a sword would slide off, and costs far less. In return, it is short, commits the whole body to every blow, and whoever misses stays open for as long as it takes to bring it back. Its haft, smoothed by hands, rain, and battle, is never slippery.
A beginner believes it is used like a woodcutter's axe, by strength of arm. His first lesson is about the hook beneath the blade, what is called the beard. With it, you drag a shield down to uncover the man, catch an ankle, disarm. He also learns that everything plays out in the distance, for an axe too far away bites nothing, and that it is cared for differently from a blade: tighten the head on the haft as soon as it loosens, keep a sturdy edge rather than a razor one, for an edge too fine chips against iron.
The master holds a weapon with three ends. He strikes with the edge, hooks with the beard, and hits with the butt or the haft when the other thinks himself safe. To him, the axe is an opener: it breaks the guard, the shield, the line, then leaves the dagger to finish the work. On the battlefield, his whole art comes down to four motions: open, hook, push, return. An axe left stuck in wood, armor, or empty air is an axe lost. Here lies the whole nature of this weapon: the sword debates, the axe cuts the conversation short.
