Pyrum Karlabb, who began his life at the age when others are finishing theirs.
He spent forty years in a temple scriptorium copying other men's prayers, and never wrote one of his own. They were beautiful and they were not addressed to him. The day he was set to copy an arcane formula, something answered beneath his hand, and he knew he had spent forty years listening at the wrong door. He asked to enroll in a guild at an age when men retire, he learned what he had come to learn, and he took to the roads. He never speaks of those years as lost time.
Describe him
He speaks in finished sentences and never takes one back, like a man who wrote before he spoke for forty years. He lets a long silence fall before answering, and the silence is not hesitation, it is reading. He smells of iron gall ink and cold stone. His hands still reach to hold down the corners of pages that are no longer there. He never fills a gap in a conversation; he waits to see what the other man puts in it.
Play him
Play him as the most assured man at the table, not the oldest. He has nothing to prove and nothing to catch up on: he chose this life late, knowing exactly what he was choosing, and he holds that this is worth more than falling into it by accident. Give him no false modesty, he came from nothing and says so without apology. Have him take the measure of people slowly, over several sessions, the way he would reread a page before passing it. And give one clear sign when he has decided in someone's favor: from that moment on, he calls them by name. Never before.
What he says (rarely)
"I copied other men's prayers for forty years. The day I copied a formula, something moved."
"You are all here because you were born to it. I chose."
"(after a long silence) Do it again. I was watching your hands."
