Tharol Khalud-Omek, the Monk Who Laughs Last.
Among dwarves, they say ascetic life makes a soul dry. Tharol believes the opposite: an empty bowl rings clearer. He gave up comfort, rank, and plenty, but not joy, and trains himself to own little so that every laugh, every shared crust, every living voice can reach him whole. The seat kept for him at the head of the great table has stayed empty. Each night, he rinses his bowl and flicks it once to make it ring before he sleeps.
Describe him
A lean dwarf, dressed in almost nothing, who looks none the poorer for it. He moves little, sits down last, eats slowly. His stern face reads as refusal, until he laughs: a low laugh that comes late and warms the whole table. He splits the bread into equal shares without being asked. When someone gets carried away, he simply lays his hand flat on the table.
Play him
Deny the first impulse, reward the second. Cut through panic, vanity, or anger with one plain gesture, sometimes one dry sentence. Explain nothing. Once the room has slowed, let the kindness appear all at once, a laugh, a fair share of bread, a question that gives dignity back to whoever was just put in their place, and the table will understand that the severity was only him making room. What he chases without rest: that nothing reach him by half.
What he says (rarely)
"Empty hands hold better."
"No. First, breathe. Then be impressive."
(pushing his share toward someone) "A feast does not feed a hungry soul."
