Dorian Cresswell, Between Two Doors
Dorian Cresswell is the Keeper of Reports of the Scarlet Tower (an order of mage-observers and spies whose emblem is an eye), and one of the four mages who secretly govern it. Everything the rectors, its field mages, learn out in the world ends up with him. He forged the steel golem that follows him everywhere with his own hands. Inside the golem’s chest, behind a plate that only Dorian’s ring can open, lie the Tower’s reports. No one else has ever known what becomes of them. Only one correspondence escapes him, the Provost’s, and he is still looking for a way to read it.
Describe Him
He receives you standing, one foot already turned toward the door. He speaks fast and low, and finishes other people’s sentences to save time. Behind him, the golem stands motionless, but whenever someone raises their voice, its head turns with a grind of steel. Dorian smells of machine oil and burnt paper. He studies your hands, your rings, and the mud on your boots more than your face, and knows where you’ve come from before you say it.Play Him
Make the players wait. Send them a rector first, then a second, each asking the same questions in a different form. When Dorian finally receives them, give him three minutes, and cut the conversation short the moment he has what he wanted. He never gives a piece of information without getting one in return, and he always picks the most valuable. What drives him: everything the players tell him will go into the golem’s chest, and he lets them know it with a glance at the steel plate.
What He Says (Rarely)
“You’ve spoken to two rectors. I already know everything, except what you’re hiding from me.”
“I don’t have time. Just tell me the name.”
“(his hand resting on the golem’s chest) What you just said is safe. For now.”
