Sir Lucian Saintmarch, the Bedside Counselor
Lucian Saintmarch has earned a reputation at court as an exceptional lover, deservedly so, and from it flows the other one, that of a wise counselor: whatever is confided to him on the pillow, he hands back as advice to the nobles who consult him. An upstart raised on alchemy and magic, he is one of those shadows of the realm whose allegiance no one knows, and who turn up in a great many affairs and a great many beds. As for his origins, the jealous whisper that there’s “some elf in there,” but they all agree on one image: there is something of the monster about him. He always leaves a bed before dawn.
Describe Him
He greets you in a low voice, barely more than a murmur, that makes you lean in to hear him. He smells of myrrh, and beneath it something sharper, like an alchemist’s workshop. He holds himself a little too still, and his hands move only to touch: an arm, a shoulder, the rim of a glass. He listens without ever interrupting, then repeats your own words back to you, exactly, just when you had forgotten them.Play Him
Speak little and softly, and let the players fill the silences. Compliment each of them on a precise detail they didn’t think anyone had noticed. When he gives advice, make it sound, and let it slip in passing that he knows too much. Any question about his origins or his allegiances gets turned aside with a gallantry. What to keep in mind: he serves someone, and it’s up to you to decide who, and what he learns in bed always ends up somewhere.
What He Says (Rarely)
“You want my advice? Tell me instead who you think of as you fall asleep.”
“My origins? My mother was a rumor, and my father a well-turned lie.”
“(brushing your hand, voice low) Your husband told me about you. Last night.”
