Ruumo Ossalaan

Ruumo Ossalaan, Ombraal of the sun.

(Note: an Ombraal is a sacred warrior, granted powers by his god. Among men he would be called a paladin.)
Every court on the continent receives him, seats him well, and repeats his words the next morning. He does not go for the honor: each invitation accepted is one more year his tribe keeps a stretch of its border. One evening he warned a table about something he had seen in the field, and the table laughed. He never speaks of it. He leaves, he comes back, and he drinks nothing they pour him.

Describe him

He speaks slowly, searching for his words, and the ones he finds are always plainer than the room expects. He does not watch the man who is speaking, he watches the ones who are listening. He stays standing when the others sit. When the room laughs at what he has just said, he waits for it to finish and completes his sentence. His handshake lasts a second longer than it should, and that is enough.

Play him

Play him at ease, not relaxed. He knows the customs better than the nobles in the room. Never let him raise his voice. Have him say the true thing without dressing it, and let the table laugh. In front of a player who takes him seriously, let him talk about his people, the tanning vats, the lost borders, longer than the scene calls for, then have him cut himself short. And hold, underneath, that he fights to have his people seen as more than a caricature, and has become their favorite one.

What he says (rarely)

"I did not say that to entertain you. You laughed anyway."
"Every year the forest gives up a day's walk. Count with me."
"(pushing the cup away) No. I have things to say tonight."
