Brann Theovald, the Rector You Never Meet by Chance
The Scarlet Tower (an order of observer mages, named for the thousand-year-old red tower that houses it) sends its rectors wherever something is happening. Brann Theovald is one of them. A rector leaves the Tower only on an intelligence mission, so wherever the order is known, his arrival in a town makes people uneasy. His reports travel back to the Tower, and no one knows what becomes of them there. Brann may never have asked.
Describe him
The man standing before you has not a single crease out of place, and he makes sure it stays that way: he looks at a seat before sitting in it. He stands straight, heels together, the book pressed against his hip. He speaks little, in a low, even voice, and lets your sentences finish before he answers. His eyes rest a long while on each of you, then return to whoever has said the least.Play him
Stand straight. Speak low. Never hurry. Ask simple questions and write down the answers in front of the players without explaining anything, because nothing is more unsettling than a man writing down what you just said. If they ask what he is doing in town, answer truthfully and vaguely, a mission for the Tower, and let the silence do the rest. Throughout, remember that he believes he serves an institution that knows what it is doing, and that he obeys with the rigor of someone who has never had to doubt.
What he says (rarely)
"Go on. I am listening, that is all I was asked to do here."
"My reports are read by people far more patient than I am."
"What becomes of a report? (he closes his book) I send it."Brann Theovald is a male human character token depicting a middle-aged warrior-cleric or inquisitor figure dressed in a red cape, black armor, and a gold-embossed belt, carrying an ancient tome at his side.
