EmberQuill

Emberquill, the Familiar Who Nests in Sparks.

Temperament

Emberquill wants in. Whenever something is being decided, he is there, even when no one asked for his opinion. He likes precise people, soft voices, and steady hands. Too much authority offends him; too much freedom makes him unbearably inventive.

Handling him

He is not ridden. He is carried, offered a perch, and more often than not invites himself. Letting him choose his lookout spares many arguments. Give him a small task before he invents a bad one: watch a door, guard a vial, warm a lock, distract someone without setting the whole room alight.

Rewards

He likes things warm, shiny, or forbidden. A heated bit of metal, a spicy crumb, a rare feather, a place near the fire, or permission to sleep on a closed book will do more than any praise. His true reward lies elsewhere. Being treated as an accomplice.

At the table

Have him react before anyone else to drafts, smoldering embers, and poorly extinguished magic. When he is forgotten for too long, he taps, scratches, puffs, or steals something useful without permission. In danger, he never strays far, and looks for the exact angle from which his small boldness might matter.
