Giant Spiders
Giant spiders are larger and more aggressive than their smaller cousins. That size, though, comes at a price. Three burdens weigh on them: being larger, they hide less well, and so are more easily hunted; they need prey to match their size to feed; and their brood, being meatier, draws all the more predators, so that few of the young ever reach adulthood. It is from these threats that they draw their danger: to survive, they have developed strategies far more fearsome than their cousins', some going so far as to take magic for their own, whether to hunt or to defend themselves.The Cellar Spider

Ambush: with your back to the wall, taking a moment to catch your breath, you feel what seems like an insect settle on your cheek, a faint tickle. You raise your hand without thinking to brush it away, and understand too late: it was no insect, but the bristle of a black leg thirty centimetres long grazing your cheek. The bite, by then, is unavoidable.When you catch sight of it: you were following with your eyes a rat fleeing before you when a black and red shape burst out and snatched the poor creature, in a flash, dragging it off into the dark, between two barrels. The cellar spider has no very potent venom. Feeding on a great many rodents, it has learned to husband it, a scant dose per prey, just enough. The real danger is its brood: the young do not yet know how to measure it out, and a single one of their bites can be enough to leave you paralysed.
