"With an ogre, it all comes down to respect, and an ogre takes offense at nothing at all."It is a great brute, slow to grasp and quick to strike, but not quite the beast you take it for: it has its laws, and holds to them above its own life. You do not speak to an ogre empty-handed. Whoever would deal with one comes bearing a dish bigger than himself; anything less is an affront, and an affront is not up for discussion. The ogre dreams itself a giant, kin to the colossi of the old ages. You spot it. A greasy smoke rises from a hollow, with a smell of overcooked meat. Around the fire, ox bones stacked in neat piles, the way a table is cleared after a feast. Then it stands, as tall as two men, and looks at your hands before it looks at your face.The ambush. A small, shrill laugh, somewhere in the brush. Then the soft thud of meat being thrown, and something enormous rises, still chewing. A thin voice shouts a word you do not understand, and the ogre turns toward you. No one brought it a dish. How it fights. It has no technique and needs none. Slow to make up its mind, it strikes with whatever comes to hand, and once it gets going, it does not stop: every blow avenges an affront, and it sees them everywhere.How to fight it. Best not to fight it at all: bring a dish, and you will have someone to talk to. The insult is the last resort. Tell it that it takes after the Litter, as the street calls goblins, rather than the giants, and it will fall into a rage so blind it forgets what it came to do, and who is leading it. Enough to turn an ogre against its goblins, or to get yourself crushed first. At your own risk.
